Northern Pike Lures: Crankbaits and Other Plugs

Northern Pike fishing using plugs such as crankbaits is popular in early summer. This is because plugs mimic the movements of the type of fish pike normally eat, and at the beginning of summer, pike are looking for a large, injured baitfish to prey upon. Plugs are successful in luring pike during this time of year because they create vibrations and side-to-side movements that are very similar to those of baitfish.

While plugs are designed to create movement on their own, you may also find success in engaging in irregular reeling speeds in order to make your lure move as well. Try reeling in quickly, and then stop. Resume reeling, this time at a slower pace. This extra effort on your part may just be enough to grab the attention of a lunker looking to feed on an injured fish. No matter what type of reeling technique you use, make sure that your bait is at the desired depth you want to fish.

There are several types of plugs that make great Northern Pike lures. Crankbaits feature a lip on the front end which gives this bait its wobbling movement. Vibrating plugs do not have a lip, but they move erratically due to the attachment eye that is located on the back end. Trolling plugs have a very wide side-to-side movement because the front end is flattened and wide. Minnow plugs do not create as much motion as crankbaits do, but the reason why they can be successful is because their shape is more natural and similar to that of a minnow than a crankbait.

There are many types of plugs to choose from when fishing for Northern Pike. Lures with natural looking features such as stripes, and lures that will create a lifelike wobble that will attract a hungry pike will be your best bet in the early summer weeks.
